U / Deep Space
This dramatically dazzling kimono reflects Kubota’s vision of the captive and restless universe at Mt. Fuji’s raging core. Swirling clouds of golden flames fly wildly from the molten magma below. Ever-dynamic bursts of color and light thrill the eye. Look carefully at the many textures Kubota developed through the techniques he used to give depth and beauty to his kimono: tie-dye (shibori), ink drawing, dense embroidery that included flat strips of gold foil, and subtle insertions of gold leaf. U/ Deep Space is a glorious summary of the seven completed kimono for ‘Universe.’ It was undoubtedly stunning as a costume for the Noh stage.
