Ohn/Fuji in the Golden Glow of Autumn

The rugged red terrain that dominates the forefront of this kimono is Mount Mitsutoge, a mountain that stands slightly to the northeast of Fuji. Many hikers have followed Mitsutoge’s well-worn paths to its summit, where they are rewarded with a superb view of the sacred mountain, a view that Kubota has captured to perfection in this kimono. The golden cone of Fuji rising from the swirling mists is exquisitely portrayed through tie-dying, ink painting and delicate pockets of embroidery. Kubota used subtle graduated tones for the forests of Itchiku tsujigahana that blanket the low hills, thus drawing attention to the intense color contrasts between the two mountains.
