Ohn/ Standing Tall Against a Winter’s Sky
The Fuji of this kimono towers high with dignity, its top sparkling snowy white against a bright, cloud-flecked sky. The boughs of the trees in the vast pine grove are delicately touched with gilt and floss embroidery. The puffy clouds clustered on the right side of the mountain are also flecked with gold embroidery, and gold leaf has been used to highlight the crevasses near the snow line. It is a moment of peace and beauty before the arrival of the winter storms. Ohn/ Standing Tall Against a Winter’s Sky was worn in a Maimu production in 2005. The performance took place under a brilliant blue sky on a crisp, late autumn day, with Fuji standing at attention—indeed, a day much as the one that Kubota depicted in this kimono.
