Ohn/ Red Fuji at Dawn

Kubota bathed this presentation of the sacred mountain in a dazzling array of luminous golds and flaming reds in order to reproduce an unforgettable image of Fuji as it captured the brilliant fire of a rising sun. An overlay of hundreds upon hundreds of tiny red silk embroidery stitches play around Fuji’s cone and intensify the sense of a mountain wrapped in flame. Kubota said he saw a glowing red Fuji at dawn only once in his life, but it served to inspire him to translate that morning vision into this equally unforgettable work of art. The actor Sato Tadafumi wore this stunning garment in a 1999 Maimu performance directed by Kubota.
