Ohn/Fuji Standing in Burning Clouds
Ohn/Fuji Standing in Burning Clouds is well worth taking time for an extended examination of the varied and complex shaped resist techniques that Kubota used in the production of this stunning kimono. These included tie-dye, stitch resist, and pressing or twisting fabric to create raised or wrinkled surfaces that gave depth and character to the textile. The areas that have not been heavily tied or stitched carry delicate ink drawings of floral motifs. A band of wisteria created with tiny tie-dyed pinches of fabric encircles the mountain. Perhaps Kubota offers a visual pun with this design, as ‘fuji’ and ‘wisteria’ are homonyms in Japanese, although they are written differently. The work is, indeed, a tour de force of craftsmanship.
