Ohn/Fuji Standing Against Golden Layers of Clouds

Ohn/Fuji Standing Against Golden Layers of Clouds is the largest of the kimono that comprise the Mount Fuji series. Its size as well as its spectacular design has made it a favorite for theatrical use. The actor Kyutaro Hashioka IX wore it in a 2001 Itchiku-Noh performance. The oversized kimono both helps the actor to create the larger-than-life persona required for the stage and adds to the theatrical tension crucial for a good performance. Kubota employed a medley of tie-dye and stitch-resist techniques in this design to create a veil-like effect for the clouds over the mountain. The smooth but dense embroidery that covers the snow ridges on the mountain summit offer a strong contrast to the texture of the sky.
