Ohn/The Calm Before the Storm

In an unusual change of style, Kubota outlined Fuji’s slopes with heavy black lines. This and the charcoal-tinged clouds that lurk close to the mountain’s slopes hint darkly at the threat of an approaching storm, yet the gold wefts of the base fabric still shine brightly through the smudgy gloom of the clouds. This kimono was worn in a Maimu theatrical production in 1999. The actor Hiroshi Nagazaki wore Ohn/The Calm Before the Storm for the performance. As you can imagine, the kimono, with its contrast of light and dark, threat and calm, made a dramatic impression on the stage.
