Kou/ Change

The tops of the mountains peeking out from the rifts of the silent, foggy atmosphere of autumn are absorbed into a silence foretelling the arrival of winter. Golden leaves still cling to the branches of a cluster of deciduous trees tucked among the pines.

With Kou/ Change we continue our progress through a luminous mountain landscape. There is a sense of contemplative silence here that permeates the autumn hills. A haze of golden leaves still cling to a vividly drawn cluster of trees tucked amongst the pines, although the distant blue mountains bring a chill to the scene and underscore the feeling that winter cannot be far away. The many white snowflake-like flecks visible in the clouds and sky may be the product of a complex dyeing process or simply a textured ground fabric. Many of Kubota’s artistic techniques remain unsolved mysteries.
